Muscle Stimulation For Scoliosis
Electrical muscle stimulation is combined with exercise for the purpose of balancing muscle structures on the opposite sides of the curvature.
Electrical muscle stimulation (shown above) uses low-level electrical current to stimulate contraction of muscles. As you can see in the picture above, wedges may be used to reduce spinal rotation and sideways curvature so that the electrical stimulation “exercises” the muscles to try to get them to stabilize the spine in a corrected position.
“Imbalanced” exercise is used to correct asymmetric muscle strength and tone, again for the purpose of balancing the muscular pull on the sides of the spine and to promote straightening.
In some cases, electrical stimulation may be used simultaneously with exercise to get maximum stimulation of muscle growth and spinal stabilization.
